Central Synagogue of Thessaloniki Jews - Tel Aviv

Central Synagogue of Thessaloniki Jews - Tel Aviv

Project Description:
  • Central synagogue of Thessaloniki Jews in Tel Aviv.
  • Located at 13 Menahem Ben Saruk Street in Tel Aviv, near the Century Tower
and in the area of the historic Sumale Village.

  • The synagogue has about 600 seats, of which 200 are for women.
  • It is designed in a unique style that looks like an oyster. The structure of the building
does indeed symbolize seashells from Thessaloniki's shores. The choice of seashell
was made because it is the only structure in nature that all of its ribs converge into
one place, as the rib synagogue converges towards the Holy Ark.

  • The northern facade of the building is made of exposed concrete, conceived and designed
by the painter Ezekiel Kimchi, and by a special method he developed incorporated
Jewish bible lines and symbols such as the lamp and Star of David.
Colorful stained glass windows were installed to describe the Sabbath and the holidays of Israel.

  • The synagogue has regular activities of prayers, lectures, classes and lessons.
  • The main initiators and donors - the Recanati family.
  • Because of its importance and uniqueness, there is a model of the synagogue in the Mini Israel Park.
